Tribune, Cubs sold for $8.2 billion  —  CHICAGO (AP) - Tribune Co. has accepted a buyout offer from real estate investor Sam Zell in a deal valued at about $8.2 billion, the owner of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, TV stations and the Chicago Cubs said Monday.

What is Zone Rating?  —  Zone rating has been around for 20 years now as a way to measure defensive players.  It's a simple concept; you just need to know two things: How many plays a fielder makes, and how many were hit into his zone.  You divide the first number by the second, and you have zone rating.

Zambrano extends deadline for contract extension  —  CINCINNATI — Pitcher Carlos Zambrano extended his deadline to reach a contract extension with the Chicago Cubs beyond Opening Day, a sign the sides are nearing agreement.  —  Zambrano and the Cubs are thought to be discussing a five-year deal worth about $80 million.

Talks with Eckstein appear stalled  —  As long ago as the Winter Warm-up, Cardinals officials expressed a hope to approach shortstop David Eckstein during spring training to discuss an extension to his current contract.  —  There were some talks but nothing substantial while the club was in Florida …
